Club Profile
The Navy Club welcomes your interest in our Club.
Please feel free to read all areas of our Web site and if you require further information, or would like to visit us,
refer to our contact page for details.
We are an independent Club, free of encumbrances, and own the top two floors of the building situated
in the heart of Fremantle, Western Australia.
Our top floor provides you with the opportunity to have a quiet drink whilst enjoying the 360 degree views of the city, Cockburn Sound, harbour and Indian ocean.
We currently have around 400 members who come from all walks of life.
Club
Formation
The Navy
Club was formed in 1947 by a number of men who returned, or decided
to settle in Fremantle, at the close of the 2nd world war. Some
100 men decided to form a support and social group, to soften the
inevitable blow of being left to some degree to fend for themselves
after experiencing the horrors of war. Support facilities of the
kind the services received today, were not available then.
We are privileged to still have some of those foundation members
as members of the Club. Their stories are a source of great pleasure, and
value, to the "younger" members and the Club holds much memorabilia.
The
struggles of the Club from its embryonic state to
the premier club in Fremantle, is something
the Club today is justly proud of. The Club was initially
based in Cliff Street, but quickly outgrew the premises.
It obtained it's first liquor licence in 1948 and
became an incorporated body in June 1949. The Club
purchased the Masonic hall and a plot of vacant land
on the corner of Mouatt and Marine Terrace in 1957
with the official opening being October 1958. Stories
abound of the fun had by the army of volunteers that
helped run the Club, and naturally enough the stories
are inclined to get better with the passage of time
and are therefore still a source of great amusement.
After
the Royal Perth Yacht club's defence of the Americas cup in 1987,
and due to structural problems it was decided to seek a new and
permanent home for the Club. This was achieved with the move to
the Clubs current superb position in 1994.
It is on sound ground due in no small measure to
the wise, yet not without risk decisions taken over the life of
the club, and so, with the hopes and aspiration of members now charged
with it's care and growth, it is most certainly a Club worthy of
your consideration.
